The issue
You’ve set the Primary Return Type to IRR in Review Preferences or on the Review itself. The Summary tab under Review → Investment still shows time-weighted returns (TWRR), in both the returns table and the Cumulative performance chart.
This is expected behaviour, not an error.
Why this happens
The Summary tab mirrors Xplan’s Portfolios → Analytics → Summary (AUD) tab, and Xplan calculates that view using TWRR only. Advice Designer keeps the Summary tab consistent with Xplan so the figures always reconcile.
The Primary Return Type setting only changes the returns shown on the Overview tab.
Which return type each tab shows
Investment tab | Return type shown |
Overview | Your Primary Return Type (TWRR or IRR) |
Summary | Always TWRR |
Performance | The return columns ticked in your Performance column defaults [Confirm: is Performance affected by the Primary Return Type?] |
Fund Investment Performance | Fund-level returns, not affected by the Primary Return Type [Confirm] |
How to show IRR in a Review
Set Primary Return Type to IRR in Review Preferences, or change it on the Review. The Overview tab updates to show IRR.
To show IRR on the Performance tab, tick the Period IRR and Annualised IRR columns under Review Preferences → Performance Column Defaults, then click Save Changes.
Leave the Summary tab as it is. It will continue to show TWRR.
💡 Note: Using Name Override to relabel a Summary column changes only the header text, not the calculation. Avoid labels such as “1y IRR” on the Summary tab, because the figures underneath are still TWRR.
How to check the Summary figures against Xplan
In Xplan, go to Portfolios → Analytics and select the Summary (AUD) tab.
Select the relevant entity from the portfolio selector dropdown.
Make sure the From and To dates and the Fees and taxes setting match the Review.
Compare the TWRR column and the Cumulative Performance chart with the Advice Designer Summary tab.
💡 Note: If the figures still don’t match, check that the Review data is current. Data is sourced from Xplan when the Review is generated, so use the refresh or re-import function to pull through the latest figures.
